Vianden castle and medieval festival (Luxembourg)

The castle of Vianden was build between 11th and 14th century and is said to be one of the largest and most beautiful castles of this time in Europe.

Unfortunately it was in left without care from mid 16th century and was in very bad condition in 1977 when the Grand Duke passed the ownership to the State of Luxembourg.

In the following years the castle was stunningly restored and is now a magnificent masterpiece of past times.

For further information on Vianden castle, please check here.

Vianden is a lovely litle town in the Ardennes, located on the north-eastern border to Germany, about 50 km from the capital and is always worth a visit,  with the castle perched above the valley, the lovely cobblestone streets and historic buildings and city ramparts.

To see and to do:

- Victor Hugo house

- trinitarian church and cloister

- Vianden city museum

- 'télésiège' chairlift taking you up the hill for a marvelous scenic view

- Indian Forest Adventure Park - tree climber - high ropes course

- openair swimming pool

In the surroundings:

- copper mine in Stolzemburg

- Vianden pump storage plant - hydro electric pumping installation

Special events in Vianden not to be missed:

NUT MARKET (October)

MEDIEVAL FESTIVAL  (July)

VIANDEN FESTIVAL (Vianden international musical festival & school - August)

BOOK FESTIVAL (September)
